new directions

i have started making smoke fired pots, something i did in spain under the direction of ceramicist miguel molet(miguelmolet.com). the process is long and in parts presice, for example the profile needs to be smooth and the pot burnished at the leather hard stage. next a fine slip is applied and polished also before a firing to 950 celcius. next the pot is put in a metal bin with sawdust and the sawdust lit and left to burn, leaving smoke markings on the pots.

More Stuff and some Chicken Bricks!

Chicken Brick!

BEEN AN AGE SINCE MY LAST BLOG SO I HAVE ALOT TO CATCH UP ON. IT HAS BEEN THE BUSY SEASON AT ROWALLANE GARDENS WITH THE GARDENS IN FULL BLOOM SO PLENTY OF VISITORS TO THE WORKSHOP AND SHOWROOM. IT IS GOOD TO GET ORDERS FROM REPEAT CUSTOMERS AND I AM NOW LEARNING WHICH POTS ARE THE BEST SELLERS. MAKING WHAT I WANT TO MAKE DOES NOT ALWAYS RESULT IN THE BEST SALES, I USUALLY MAKE LARGER ITEMS AND SMALLER ONES SELL QUICKER. A LITTLE CUSTOMER FOCUSED DISCIPLINE IN THE MAKING PROCESS HAS STARTED TO BETTER SALES, ALWAYS WELCOME.

I HAVE A NEW GLAZE WHICH WORKS WELL OVER MY BLACK SLIP PROVIDING A BLUE FINISH SO I WANT TO PURSUE THIS FURTHER.

JUST ABOUT RECOVERED FROM THE FESTIVE SEASON AND NOW IT IS TIME TO CLEAN OUT THE WORKSHOP AND START WITH A CLEAN AND CLEAR FOCUS.I INTEND TO START MAKING SOME MORE SMOKE FIRED POTS THIS YEAR, A MORE ARTISTIC APPROACH IF YOU LIKE.
JANUARY AND FEB ARE A GOOD TIME TO HIBERNATE AND TO SOME SERIOUS THROWING. VERY COLD THOUGH, HANDS AND FEET OF ICE.

NEW YEAR,NEW IDEAS.
